Urban Wetland-Based
Learning For Children

Children and nature have always been connected. The natural world is one of the best environments for children to explore, absorb, and enjoy. Children living in the urban environments today seem to be exposed less and less to the open invitations of nature. This disconnection from nature is one of the major problems faced by nature conservation.

At Love a Tree Foundation, we create beautiful experiences and learning activities built around our urban wetlands, the most precious natural elements we have in our cities, to help children to connect more with nature. We offer exciting opportunities for them to discover nature, become curious observers, and changemakers who will have a positive impact on the planet.

Our goal is to empower a generation of children who will have a lifelong connection with Nature

“If children loose contact with nature they won’t fight for it”

– George Monbiot

Our programs enable children to go out from the traditional classrooms. We support them to look for opportunities that would help them interact more with natural ecosystems through activities and hands-on experiences.

We have exciting nature based activities for children living in the cities. Wetlands trails, bird watching, pond dipping, star gazing, nature journaling, nature viewing soil scavenger hunts to virtual initiatives such as nature blogging and citizen science projects, all our initiatives are made to create a stronger emotional connection with the natural environment around them which they directly or indirectly interact with.

We believe children with a greater connection to nature are more likely to behave positively towards the environment, wildlife and habitats living around them.

Most of our initiatives are built around urban wetlands. As they are the most precious natural eco systems we have in our cities. Urban wetlands will help in facilitating a natural learning environment filled with excitement and wonder for the children. We will select wetland parks within close proximity to each group to allow the children freedom to explore, connect and learn.

Urban Wetlands of Sri Lanka are filled and swarming with biodiversity and are the most wonder filled spaces for children to explore and fall in love with nature.  As children living in the cities not only it is important for them to learn how urban wetlands are part of our natural infrastructure, providing essential protection against climate change, floods, droughts and pollution but to also be active participants in loving, protecting and conserving them.
