Nature’s Playground: Why Your Next Family Trip Should Be to a Wetland

Colombo’s wetlands are full of life, learning, and adventure and they make the perfect place to spend quality time with your children. These green and blue spaces are not just beautiful; they are home to birds, fish, insects, and plants that play a vital role in keeping our city healthy. Visiting a wetland gives kids a chance to connect with nature, explore, and learn in a way that no classroom can offer.

Here are some fun and educational activities you can try with your kids:

  • Bird Watching: Encourage your children to spot different birds, from herons and kingfishers to migratory visitors. Listening to their calls is both relaxing and a great way to learn about wildlife.

  • Observe Water Animals: Take a close look at fish, frogs, crabs, and small insects in the water. Kids love watching how these animals move and interact in their natural environment. And if you’re patient and a little lucky, you might even spot water monitors gliding through the water, a water snake resting along the banks, or even a crocodile. Many people are surprised to learn that we do have crocodiles right here in Colombo’s wetlands!

  • Touch and Explore Plants: Wetlands are full of interesting textures. Let your kids feel tree bark, leaves, and flowers to notice how each plant is unique.

  • Walk Along the Trails: A slow walk along the boardwalks or pathways lets children observe nature safely while learning about the importance of wetlands.

  • Sketch or Draw: Bring a notebook or sketchpad. Drawing birds, plants, or water animals encourages observation and creativity.

  • Take Photos: Kids can capture their favorite sights , colorful birds, reflections in the water, or patterns in plants and mud.

  • Feel the Mud and Water: Safely touching shallow water or mud is a sensory experience. Children love discovering small creatures living in it, like crabs and insects.

  • Smell and Explore Flowers: Wetlands often have wildflowers and aromatic plants. Smelling the flowers and noticing their colors helps children appreciate the small details in nature.

  • Count Birds or Animals: Turn it into a fun game. How many species of birds, frogs, or insects can your kids spot in an hour?

  • Small Clean-Up Activity: Collect litter and plastic along the way and teach children how we can protect these beautiful places while we enjoy and learn from them. It’s a simple act, but it helps young minds understand responsibility and care for nature.

Spending time in wetlands is not just about fun , it helps children understand the value of ecosystems, develop curiosity, and build empathy for the environment. Even simple activities like walking, observing, or drawing teach kids to slow down and notice the world around them.

So pack your shoes, a notebook, and your camera, and visit the nearest wetland with your children. Let them explore, discover, and fall in love with the natural wonders of Colombo’s wetlands ,a gift they will carry with them for a lifetime.

Some of the wetland parks you can easily visit in Colombo include Beddegana Wetland Park, Diyasaru Wetland Park, Rampart Wetland Park, and Gothatuwa Wetland Park. Beyond these parks, Colombo is also blessed with many open water bodies and natural spaces, especially Thalangama Lake and surrounding paddy fields, where birds, butterflies, and other wildlife thrive.

You don’t have to travel far to experience nature, sometimes it’s just around the corner, waiting to be noticed.
